Of significant historical importance, the Canary Islands have also been referred to as the Small Continent because of their extremely different landscapes with European, African and American vegetation. Its volcanic mountain ranges exceed 2000m in the center of one of the islands, featuring enormous granite rock as well as bizarre ravines.
Climate zones on the islands alternate from rock massifs to wilderness-like regions to sub-tropical vegetation, while a whole variety of beaches allow spectacular views of the snow-covered mountain peaks during the winter month.
The Island Gran Canaria is also referred to as the Island of the Everlasting Spring since its temperatures rarely rise above 28º in summer month and rarely fall below 23º in the winter month. The prevailing winds there are the trade winds, which blow strongest during the summertime when the high-pressure over the Azores is pre-dominant. This wind is call the Passat.
Arinaga, the location of the World Speed Sailing Challenge in 2003, is a romantic fishing-village on the south-eastern coast of Gran Canaria. It's located 1650 km south-west of Spains capital Madrid and approximately 130km west of the North African coastline of Morocco. Its shores have made this area a favorite destination for windsurfers from around the world as evidenced by its neighboring villages of Vargas and Pozo Izquierdo, which are the most anticipated stops of PWA World Cup Tour for the past 13 years.
